How to: Cleaning Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl fencing is well known for its durability and longevity, but one of the best things about vinyl fencing is that it is very low maintenance.  Unlike wood, which must be stained or treated regularly and will need to be replaced often, Weatherables vinyl fencing will last a lifetime with very little upkeep.

Vinyl fencing is typically kept fairly clean just from seasonal rainfall, but it may need a more thorough cleaning from time to time.  If your fence does not get direct sunlight, for example, green mildew may grow over time.  The great thing about vinyl is, it's simple to clean and stays looking brand new year after year.  Cleaning your vinyl fence can be done using one of two methods depending on how set in the dirt or mildew. For the best results, it is best to choose an overcast and cool day (55°-75°) to clean your vinyl fence.

Method 1: Light dirt/mildewDirty Vinyl

For light mildew or dirt, simply fill a bucket with hot water and dish soap and wipe the vinyl down with a rag. It is best to start at the bottom and work your way up to reduce streaking.  Some areas may require scrubbing, but avoid harsh materials such as scouring pads as this may dull the finish of your vinyl fence.  Only cloth rags or soft sponges should be used.  After you have wiped down the fence, thoroughly rinse off any remaining soap with a garden hose.  This ensures the soap doesn't dry and create a sticky film on the vinyl for debris to stick to.

Method 2: Heavy dirt/mildew

For heavy mildew or dirt, you may need to apply a cleaning solution to your fence and use a power washer to clean it fully. We suggest a simple cleaning solution* made of household cleaning supplies:

dirty vinyl gate to clean gate

  • 1/3 cup powdered detergent (such as Tide, All, or Gain)
  • 2/3 cup of a non-bleach cleaner (such as Lysol or Simple Green)
  • 1 gallon of water

*Assure this solution is mixed properly using these portions, as greater concentrations could damage the finish on your fencing or harm nearby plants.

Spray the solution onto the fence, allowing it to soak for 5-10 minutes.  Then, using a high-pressure washer, spray each panel until it is free of the dirt or mildew.  Some areas may require additional scrubbing with a rag or soft sponge.  Do not spray too much of the fence at once, as the solution should not be allowed to dry on the panel. Repeat these steps for each part of your fence until your entire fence is sparkling clean!  See the difference?

One of the many reasons to purchase vinyl fencing is for the longevity and low maintenance nature of the product.  If you have questions about cleaning vinyl fencing or to learn more about the benefits vinyl fencing provides to homeowners, contact Weatherables today.
