Vinyl Fencing Quality: What Really Matters

When it comes to vinyl fencing, there are vast differences in quality among the products on the market.  Several factors determine the strength and quality of vinyl extrusions.  This guide will help explain what you need to know before you purchase vinyl fencing.

Thickness

This is one of the easiest factors to measure.  Many ‘in stock’ and ‘prefab’ vinyl fencing panels are made from very thin material that easily cracks chips, and breaks.  A simple stone thrown from your lawn mower could be enough to leave a hole in thinner material.  So how can you tell if the vinyl is thick enough to stand the test of time? A caliper or good tape measure can help.

Most vinyl fencing has 3 main parts: posts, rails, and pickets.  Weatherables is committed to providing the strongest, most durable and low maintenance vinyl fencing available.  That means we never compromise on quality.  You’ll find that our material is thicker than almost every other competitor on the market.

Vinyl Thickness
  Weatherables Industry Average
Posts .150" .125"
1.5 x 5.5 Rails .090" .070"
1.75 x 3.5 Rails .110" .08"
T&G Pickets .065" .040"

Co-Extrusion

Weatherables vinyl fencing is manufactured using the latest co-extrusion technology. Co-extruded vinyl is consistently stronger than mono-extruded vinyl because the inner layer is mixed with acrylic modifiers.  These impact modifiers increase the durability and strength of the vinyl and prevent it from cracking and breaking.  Weatherables uses only 100% virgin vinyl in all of our co-extruded vinyl parts.  This means that when you purchase from Weatherables, you can be sure you are getting the strongest, most durable vinyl on the market.

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium Dioxide is an important component in vinyl fencing.  Without it, vinyl is very susceptible to UV rays which can weaken and discolor the vinyl, leading to a yellowed fence that will become brittle over time.  Titanium dioxide also aids in the strength of the vinyl fencing in cold weather.  Weatherables vinyl extrusions contain 10-12 parts per 100 of titanium dioxide.  As a result, our products can withstand both intense sun and bitter cold and still look beautiful for years.

Routed System

Unlike many ‘in stock’ and ‘prefab’ vinyl fencing panels, which use a bracket system, Weatherables uses a screwless notch system with routed posts.  This is important because fencing that uses a bracketed system is more likely to break and fall apart over time, whereas rails in a routed system will not.  Also, all Weatherables fencing panels have an aluminum insert in the bottom rail as well, which keeps the fence panel from sagging over time.

As you can see, it is important to take all of these factors into consideration and ask the important questions when purchasing a new vinyl fence.  If you have any questions about vinyl quality, are interested in one of the many styles of Weatherables fencing, or would like to receive a free sample kit, please call us at 888-743-3673 or click here to request more information.
