Lighting Product FAQs

What types of LED lighting does Weatherables® offer?

Visit the LED Lighting page on our website to see all available options. Options include solar post caps, low-voltage LED post caps, deck, stair, and rail lights, and Plug and Play accessories.

What's the difference between solar and low-voltage post cap lights?

Solar post cap lights need no wiring: a built-in solar cell charges a rechargeable AA LiFePO4 battery during the day, and the light shines at night. Low-voltage LED post caps are wired to a transformer, so they deliver consistent brightness every night regardless of weather or shade. Read more in Solar vs. Wired Deck & Fence Post Caps.

Should I choose solar or low-voltage lighting for my deck or fence?

Choose solar post caps when your posts get plenty of direct sun and you want the fastest, wire-free install. Choose low-voltage lighting for shaded areas, larger projects, or when you want reliable, even brightness, dimming, and accent lights on stairs and rails.

What is Plug and Play LED lighting?

Plug and Play is Weatherables® low-voltage lighting system. Harness connectors and splitters link each light back to a low-voltage transformer, so you can build a complete deck, railing, or fence lighting layout from ready-made components. No wires to cut and no electrician needed: just plug in the power supply.

Do you offer low-voltage lighting kits?

Yes. Visit the LED Lighting page on our website to see available kits. Low-voltage 6-packs and expansion packs are available for the Cape May, Neptune, and Haven post caps.

What colors do LED post cap lights come in?

See your selected post cap style for available colors. The Cape May, for example, comes in white, tan, and khaki.

What's the difference between Halo and Downward post cap lighting?

Halo post caps shine light outward for a soft accent glow around the cap. Downward post caps direct light down toward the post, railing, and deck surface. Many of our post cap styles, including Cape May, are available in both lighting options.

Lighting Installation FAQs

How do I install solar post cap lights?

Solar post cap lights install like a standard post cap, with no wiring, transformer, or outlet required. Product pages like the Solar Cape May include a short installation video so you can see the process before you start.

How do I plan a low-voltage LED lighting installation?

Start by sketching your deck or fence and marking where you want lights, including steps, furniture, and the grill. Then choose harness lengths and splitters for each railing section, measure your posts for cap size, select your post caps and accent lights, and pick a transformer. Our LED Deck Light Planning Guide and Low Voltage Installation Instructions walk through each step.

Which low-voltage transformer do I need?

Count every low-voltage post cap and accent light in your plan. The 12-watt Plug and Play transformer powers up to 16 lights, and the 50-watt transformer powers up to 60 lights. Contact support for more information.

Can I use my own low-voltage transformer?

Yes. Low-voltage post caps such as the Cape May can be installed with our Plug and Play system or any low voltage transformer. Using our Plug and Play transformer, harnesses, and splitters keeps every connection matched to the system.

Can I dim my low-voltage deck lights?

Yes. The Plug and Play Dimmer is a single-color LED dimmer with a remote control, so you can adjust brightness for dinners, parties, or late-night ambiance. The remote has a 60-foot range with high, medium, and low settings, plus a twilight mode that runs lights at 5% output. It works with all Weatherables low-voltage post caps, deck lights, stair lights, and rail lights.

Can I add post cap lights to my existing fence or deck railing?

Yes. Post cap lights replace your current post caps, so you can add lighting to an existing vinyl fence or railing without changing the posts. They fit any post that matches the cap size, including posts from other brands, so measure the outside width of your posts before ordering.

Can I put LED post cap lights on wood posts?

Yes, with a vinyl post sleeve. Most wood posts don't match the exact sizes our caps are made for, so cover each post with a vinyl post sleeve, then choose the light cap that matches the sleeve size.

What size post cap light do I need?

Measure the outside width of your post, then choose the matching cap size. Popular styles like the Cape May come in 4", 5", and 6" sizes in both solar and low-voltage versions, while size options vary on other styles. Solar caps also come in smaller 2.5" and 3" sizes for aluminum and vinyl deck railing. Contact support for more information.

How much wiring do I need for low-voltage deck lighting?

Wiring depends on the width of each railing section. Plug and Play harness connectors come in 2 ft, 5 ft, 7 ft, and 9 ft lengths and can be combined to span longer runs, and each post cap needs a 2-way or 5-way splitter. Sketch your layout first so you can count harnesses and splitters before ordering.

Maintenance & Appearance FAQs

Are Weatherables® LED lights weatherproof?

Our LED lighting is made from durable, weather-resistant materials designed to withstand the elements while keeping its performance and appearance over time. That makes it a long-lasting choice for fences, decks, and porches exposed to sun, rain, and snow. The Plug and Play system uses commercial-grade components built for years of use.

Are LED deck and fence lights energy efficient?

Yes. LED lights provide a warm, inviting glow while using very little energy. Solar post caps go a step further, running entirely on sunlight with no electricity cost at all. The dimmer's twilight mode also saves energy by running lights at 5% output.

Can deck lighting make stairs safer?

Yes. Stair and side lights, flush deck lights, and under-rail lighting brighten steps and walkways so family and guests can see where they're going at night. Pairing them with post cap lights creates an evenly lit, safer outdoor space.

What warranty comes with Weatherables® LED lighting?

Lighted post caps and select lighting accessories are covered by warranties from their respective manufacturers rather than the Weatherables® vinyl warranty. See our warranty page for details. Contact our team or call 1-888-743-3673 for warranty details on a specific light.

Lighting Features FAQs

How long do solar post cap lights stay on at night?

Run time depends on how much sun the solar cell receives that day: more direct sun means a longer glow at night. Cloudy days, shade from trees or buildings, and shorter winter days can all reduce run time. For posts that get little direct sun, low-voltage post caps are the more reliable choice.

Can I replace the battery in a solar post cap?

Yes. Solar post caps store energy in a rechargeable battery. Our newer solar post caps (2015 and later) typically use LiFePO4 3.2V AA solar batteries. The earlier model solar post caps use the NiCd 1.2V rechargeable batteries. To determine the battery required for your specific model of post cap, be sure to check the voltage of the battery currently in your post cap.

How do I clean and maintain LED post cap lights?

Wipe the solar panel and lens with a soft, damp cloth so dust, pollen, or snow don't block charging or dim the light. Clean the cap itself with mild soap and water, the same way you clean your vinyl fence or railing. See our vinyl cleaning instructions.

What color light do the LED post caps give off?

Our low-voltage LED post caps use 5000K light, which mimics the bright light of the midday sun. It provides excellent visibility on decks and stairs and a crisp, modern look.
