Vinyl Railing FAQs

What’s included in the railing kit?

Weatherables® vinyl railing kits include the top and bottom rails along with the necessary bracket hardware (two top brackets and two bottom brackets per kit). Posts, along with post caps, are sold separately, since the rails attach to whatever post material you choose using the included brackets.

Are mounting brackets and hardware included?

Yes, the necessary brackets and hardware are included with every railing kit. Additional bracket kits are only needed if you're splitting a section into two or more smaller pieces.

Do the railings include an aluminum insert?

Yes, Weatherables® vinyl railing styles include an aluminum insert in the top rail (and in some styles, the bottom rail as well) for added strength.

Are angle adapters available for non-standard corners?

Weatherables® offers universal brackets that accommodate horizontal angles from 15 to 45 degrees, as well as a universal stair bracket.

Are railing kits available  in different lengths?

Yes, most Weatherables® vinyl railing styles are available in multiple lengths (commonly 4, 6, 8, and 10 feet).

What's the difference between two similar-looking railing styles?

Differences typically come down to the top rail profile — some styles use a flat rail matching the bottom rail, while others use a "T"-shaped top rail for a more contoured, comfortable grip. Contact support if you'd like a specific side-by-side comparison for two styles you're deciding between or order your sample kit.

Are these railings difficult to install, or DIY-friendly?

Yes. Weatherables® vinyl railing systems are designed for DIY installation and include detailed installation instructions.

Can stair railing kits accommodate a sloped ramp, such as a 1:8 slope, rather than standard stairs?

Stair kits are built for standard staircase angles rather than ramp slopes. For a specific ramp application, it's best to confirm compatibility with our team directly before purchasing.

How many stair steps will a stair rail kit fit?

This depends on step height, step depth, and total staircase width. It's best determined with an on-site measurement rather than a general rule. Check with the product's installation instructions for more information.

Can these railings be installed onto brick columns, a concrete porch, or paver patios?

Weatherables® vinyl railing brackets are designed to attach to any flat surface, including masonry and concrete, though you may need to swap the included hardware for fasteners rated for that specific surface material.

Can railings be attached to existing wood posts?

Yes, Weatherables® vinyl railing brackets attach to any flat surface, including wood posts, using the included hardware.

Can railing be attached to a round column?

The included brackets are designed for flat surfaces. Mounting to a round column requires additional hardware not included in the kit. Contact support to walk through the best option for the specific column.

Can this replace a railing that was previously mounted using horizontal brackets on a porch post?

Weatherables® vinyl railing brackets can attach to any flat surface. Depending on your existing mounting surface, you may need to swap the included hardware for fasteners suited to that material.

Are railing installation and removal services available?

Weatherables® is unable to provide installation or removal services directly, but contractor can be hired to assist with that.

Can the railing kit be cut down to a shorter length or width?

Yes. All Weatherables® vinyl railing kits can be cut down on-site to your desired length or width. Since the top rail contains an aluminum insert, a blade capable of cutting aluminum will be needed. Any cut ends are concealed by the included brackets during installation.

Can the balusters/spindles be cut to shorten the overall railing height (for example, down to 30", 32", or 34")?

Yes, cutting the balusters down to length is the standard way to achieve a custom finished height that's shorter than the kit's standard height.

Does the listed 36" height include ground clearance, or is it measured differently?

The listed height is the overall installed height from the ground to the top of the top rail. It already accounts for a small built-in clearance gap between the bottom rail and the ground — this clearance amount can vary slightly by style. Check the spec sheet that comes with the Weatherables® vinyl railing kit to see if precise clearance matters.

Are there options available for non-standard widths (for example, wider than 6 feet but narrower than 8 feet)?

There are two options available: order the next larger kit size and cut it down to the desired width, or split a section in half and add a post between the two pieces, which adds a few inches to the total installation width. If choosing the section option, an extra bracket kit and post sleeve kit will be needed to support the added post.

Can two railing sections be joined to create a longer run, like 12 feet total?

Yes, two sections can be joined, but a post is required between to support the connection point.

Can the top or bottom rails be purchased separately?

Individual rail pieces aren't sold directly online. Call customer support directly to place that order.

Is the listed kit length (e.g., "96 inches") the exact length of the rails themselves?

The listed length refers to the overall kit size, while the rails themselves measure slightly under that figure to account for the post brackets on each end (for example, a 96" kit's rails measure closer to 95.5"). This is expected and factored into the installation design.

What are the exact dimensions of the posts, rails, and pickets/spindles?

Dimensions vary somewhat by style. Refer to the spec sheets for exact dimensions.

What's the spacing between spindles/balusters?

Spindle spacing varies by railing style. Refer to the spec sheets for exact dimensions.

Is the railing length or overall design customizable?

Yes — all Weatherables® vinyl railing products can be cut down to a custom length or height as needed.

Will cutting a gate to fit affect the warranty?

We do not recommend cutting a gate to fit. That will void the warranty.

Can the railing be painted?

Weatherables® does not recommend painting vinyl railing products. Paint can void the warranty.
